projectWHY and planetWHY

a story retold

Project WHY began with 50 children and a few volunteers teaching them spoken English.
As time went by, numerous challenges arose, and to each challenge, the answer was a new activity.

The number of children increased, their demands multiplied, new teachers were discovered within the tiny jhuggis and lanes, ad hoc classrooms had to be found. Parks were cleaned, tents put up, unused pavements cleared, any place would do, but no child was ever sent away sent away. Giri Nagar, Shiv Mandir Camp, Okhla phase I and II, Sanjay Colony, Sangam Vihar, the children came from far flung places..
Slowly projectWHY became planetWHY, a place where we would to try to solve every fear, every problem, fulfill every dream and aspiration...

So while continuing to provide education support, we also began solving problems, easing pain, taking up challenges and fighting for rights. Today as we look back we can see that projectWHY has come a long way, and met its challenges with success. All school children of school going age have been admitted into schools, and have caught up with their studies. March 2003 was a great moment as 98% of our children cleared their school examinations. For most of them, the only support they got was from the projectWHY team as they had illiterate parents, no place to study and a family too poor to provide tuition. Our aim remains to ensure that no child drops out, and that he passes his school Boards with an aggregate that can open new avenues to him. But somewhere along the way, projectWHY gifted us planetWHY .

A strange but beautiful land that brings together different parts of India, different social and economic strata of society, different forms of worship and faith under one invisible roof big enough to hold everyone together. Often ties and bond are strengthened by sharing pain and anguish. Problems bring us close and soluti ons are found together. Moment of sorrow are shared as well as times of joy. And each day our little planet grows..
