High drop out rates in municipal and government schools, and extremely poor performance of children prompted us to start our after school education support programme. Our main objective is to enhance school performance, contain drop out rates and ensure access to secondary school.Children coming from urban slums are unable to cope with their studies. This is often due to poor teaching conditions within the school, and lack of help from home. Moreover children have no place to study, no access to books or tutors. The primary programme is by far the most important one as it is in these classes that most children drop out.

Early Education

the Govindpuri creche

our flagship early education is perhaps our most up market activity. Though its is housed today in its own premisses on the ground floor of our building and boasts of its own bathroom,it began like everything else in project why, in a tiny veranda with a handful of kids, went through its pig park and under the tent days. However today its a well run project, divided into three sections. Emphasis is laid on developing the child's creative side and emphasis is on learning as fun!. It is also a place where there one can see a greater cross section of society from the poorest of the poor to second and third generation learners. For more here.

The Manav Kalyan creche

the Prep class

As soon as the children are 3+. and have spent some time in our creche, they move to our prep class where they learn pre-school skills in order to prepare them for regular school. For more click here.

the foster care programme

This is by far our more ambitious programme. We are at present running a trial version for one year. It will then dovetail into Planet Why. It aims at giving children from extremely deprived homes a chance at better future, and home to those who never had one or who may lose it once their parents pass on. For more click here.

Primary centres

Okhla Phase I

This is by far our leading project as it is one that was set up in toto by two of our 'empowered' teachers. Meet these women of substance and share some of their woes here . But the real reason for which this centre is close to our heart is because this part of Okhla does not have any primary school in the vicinity and hence most of the children do not go to school at all. Being a factory area, it has a substantial number of bad elements and illegal trafficking and the children are often used to perpetrate petty crime. Our presence is of course not liked as we are pushing back children into school. However our staying has now been recognised and is even appreciated by some. For more click here.

Sanjay Colony

The Sanjay Colony primary extension was replaced our giri nagar programme. It can be considered as our first step 2 project as Giri nagar was closed because it was felt that parents had finally understood the role they had to play in the education of their children. Many were now sending their wards to private tuitions. Moreover the opening of two more NGOs made us redundant. We had to look for greener pastures or in our case to areas where children were in need of help and parents needed to be motivated. Nehru Camp

The Nehru Nagar extension camp was started a year back. Situated in the heart of the Govindpuri slums it reaches out to over 60 children. for more click here.

Our secondary outreach

The journey continues, from containing dropout rates the task is now to aim at getting high marks. Every student is taught to give up studying by rote and to learn to comprehend and understand. Access to varied teaching material is encouraged. Moreover the phobia for mathematics and English is gently removed, and the importance to master all subjects slowly imparted. Adolescents from underprivileged backgrounds have extremely poor self esteem and a wide range of creative activities are encouraged to develop self confidence and self-perception. This done sports, theatre and debates. Peer group interface on social pressures is encouraged.

Junior Secondary

The junior secondary is a recent programme. In the initial stages all secondary classes were clubbed together. The junior secondary reaches out to class VI to VII and includes a wide range of activities. For more click here.

Senior secondary

The why secondary support centre has come of age with 5 years running of 100% result This is the place where failures become toppers The credit goes to the small committed teachers who steer this activity. drop by any time and you will find the tiny classrooms bursting at the seams. The students are s engrossed in their work that you can remain standing for a long time before you get noticed. The challenge is not to get students to clear examinations but to get them to have good results that would enable them to study further. Our topper this year secured the 11th position in Deli! Cyber why
