It began

in a small village..

A visit to a backward village in Bihar, and Anuradha Bakhshi realises that an accident of history was all that stood between the extremely privileged life she had led and the one she might have had to lead.
A debt needs to be paid. She creates the Sri Ram Goburdhun Charitable Trust in 1998 and thus begins a journey:The learning phase lasts 2 years and waves through attempts to create employment options for people with disability, and to run a nutrition programme for street children.
But it is an accidental encounter in 2000 that brings her journey to its destined end: the disturbing sight of a disabled young man, Manu, lying in filth, neglected and humiliated triggers a major change in her life. She realizes he had no option but to be reintegrated into the very street he was born in! and in reintegrating Manu, she creates the WHY Children Resource Centre.

ourTomorrows

Project WHY believes in empowering people to take their lives in their own hands.
This is our main commitment.
We began our children resource centre as an answer to a series of questions:
Why do children from underprivileged backgrounds perform poorly?
Why are the drop out figures so high?
What skills should be taught to them to enhance their employment options?
How could this be done in a self-sustainable community driven action?
Three years have gone by and we have some answers, some solutions and some dreams.

some answers

The past four years has proven that conatining drop out rates and getting children from slums and underprivileged backgrounds to perform well, is a task that can be easily achieved. We have done so, in extremely basic conditions and with staff drawn from within the community.
To ensure that a centre like projectWHY can be *created* in any slum, we have also involved that parents by forming an association and a parents committe. What an illiterate parent cannot do in isolation, a group guided by an organisation like ours, can do extremely well.

some solutions

solutions lie in involving the community and the parents and making them aware of the role they have to play in the education of their children, a role that cannot and should not be *taken* over by anyone.
solutions lie in trying to get the community to act and find alternatives whenever possible.
solutions lie in creating awareness within the community.

some dreams...

projectWHY always had dreams for the children it chose to stand by.
