A centre for nurturing and supporting disadvantaged local women, the women centre was set up in October 2007 . It also runs a very succesful children centre with over
300 children attending our primary and secondary programmes.
OUR MISSION
Our women centre which was set up on October 15th 2007vindicated some of our decisions that may have looked hare
brained at first. But as is always the case at project why we followed our heart.
To begin with the women's centre was providing shelter to two women who were trying to rebuild their lives But we soon realised that running a residential programme in such limited space would be very expensive
and thus we decided to keep a room for temporary shelter on a need basis.
The women centre runs income generating skills for local women in batches of 120. Classes offered are beauty and sewing. It is heart warming to see that many women have begun income
generating activities after
completing their courses with us. Some have started their own beauty parlours in thevillage or in the slums they live in. Others work in beauty parlours. Many women have begun taking
stitching orders at home and some work in export houses.
A dynamic team steers the Kamala centre: Dharmendra, Rajesh, Geeta, Parth, Parveen, Archana, Kalpana, Priyanka, Sujata, Neetu, Neha, Ashish, Rampreet, Roshni
They are all from the local community and have incredible commitment and passion
Activitiesfor children
A primary outreach in 2 shifts based on our successful pwhy model has also begun and reaches out to almost 300 kids.Class VI, VII, VIII, IX and X have also been added .
Activities for women
Stitching and tailoring classes as well as beauty classes have begun. 120 women are attending the courses that have a duration of 6 months. We also have long waiting lists!
An evening adult education class has also begun and we soon begin english conversation classes on
popular demand.
But all these are just ways of getting the confidence and trust of local women.
Our main objective remains to raise awareness on issues we feel
are important such as hygiene, nutrition, the girl child, domestic violence, legal rights and HIV AIDS. We plan to introduce these slowly and gently as the social
fabric of the area is very conventional and highly charged.
At a later stage we also plan to address issues such as budget management, saving and micro finance
