PROJECT WHY SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM

How it began - a message from Anou

Sponsoring a child is quite a favourite with NGOs the world over. Large ads in all shades of media soliciting you to become a sponsor are more than abundant. For a few pennies, you are told, you can change the life of a child. I do not know why but I never warmed up to the idea. In days when I was myself a donor, I never sponsored a child. I preferred giving to organisations that I felt were doing good work, sponsoring a child was almost anathema.

Years went by and I found myself on the other side of the fence. I was the one needing donors. My b?(TM)te noire remained and we never went the sponsorship way. I was even vindicated when I visited an orphanage and saw sponsored kids with their Superhero school bags almost ostracised by their peers who only had dull cloth bags. Whenever anyone suggested we go the sponsorship way, I resisted vehemently proffering a litany of reasons against the very thought.

Never say never is a maxim that is always proved true and is not necessity the mother of all inventions? And above all are not the morrows of my children far more important than any quirk of mine? When our little foster care kids were left high and dry by a potential benefactor, the only road we could walk was the sponsorship one. And then when we were recently faced with a huge hole in our budget and had to face the aftermath of recession, the sponsorship issue came up again. Many felt that this was an option that would endure all economic mishaps.

After much deliberations and thought we havedecided to launch a sponsorship programme, whereby we requested donors to sponsor not one specific child, but children within a group. For a fixed amount of money you would sponsor one special child, or two cr?®che children or 4 school going children. We at pwhy, would have a blog that would keep the sponsor abreast with everything that was going on. The programme was launched recently and we hope it will succeed.

For me personally it has been another milestone. I look at it as yet another test thrown my way by the God of Lesser Beings to see how far I would go to protect the smiles I hold in custody.

SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM

For the price of a candy bar or less than a cup of coffee you can change the life of a child by joining our sponsorship programme:

You can sponsor the education for two kindergarden children or the Primary or Secondary Education for four children or the Day care for one special needs child.

This covers all expenses, including rent, teacher salaries, supplies, transportation (if necessary), field trips or outings, and any other required cost. Kindergarten students and children with special needs are more expensive to sponsor as they are younger and require a smaller teacher to student ratio and transportation to and from their homes. Ideally, we hope to find sponsors who can commit to donating on a long-term basis to ensure the financial stability of our education programs. As a sponsor, you will be assigned students based on your age and gender preferences.

You will also receive news, pictures and information about your students class twice a year, and have access to a sponsors' blog. Due to the nature and scope of our organizations, we cannot guarantee that the same students will remain in a class year after year. However, if one of your children moves away or leaves for any reason, you will be given a new child from the same class

BACKGROUND OF CLASSES and CENTRES

We reach a total of over 700 children through our different centres. We have:

3 Kindergarten (Nursery Class) centres
4 Primary (Class 1 to 5) centres
1 centre for Junior Secondary (Middle School: Class 6 to 8) students
1 centre for Senior Secondary (High School: Class 9 to 12) students

KINDERGARTEN CLASSES

We have three separate facilities with 125 students total. Our early education students learn and develop the skills they need to succeed in primary school. They experience a variety of both daily regular activities and special events such as outings. Our students learn about responsibility, self-care, good communication skills and much more. We organize transport to ensure regular attendance as these students are too young to come to school alone

PRIMARY CLASSES

We have 250 students in four different locations. Our students enroll in government schools and our after-school programs help sharpen their skills and provide vital extra support. We go beyond the basic school curriculum with English lessons, environmental education, current events, outings, and individualized revision for exams.

MIDDLE SCHOOL/JUNIOR SECONDARY CENTRES

We have 125 students at two centres. Our after school enrichment program covers all academic subjects and provides intensive support and review before important exams. We also provide instruction in environmental issues, Sports, computers, chess and other games, and spoken English.

SENIOR SECONDARY/ HIGH SCHOOL

We have 120 students in two locations. Our teachers continue with the subjects from the Middle School Program, but also provide intensive support for the board exams to ensure that our students are prepared and confident.
